Vanessa sat in the car in deafening silence. It ate at her, it ate at Jim. They sat, stewing, feeling the weight of the air pressing into their bodies.
Vanessa drove with purpose. Lights flashed as cars zipped past them, going the other way. Otherwise, the road was quiet, only illuminated by the two steady beams of her headlights.
They had another two hours of this hellish journey left. In the dark. In this silence.
I can’t do this, Vanessa thought. She loved Jim. Jim loved her. They were both just exhausted and tired and it had been a bloody long day.
“I’m sorry,” Vanessa whispered taking a hand off the wheel and squeezing Jim’s hand lightly.
He looked at her, a small smile appearing on his face.
“I am too,” he replied.
The weight left the air. Vanessa felt like she could breathe again.
“Love you,” Jim said.
“I love you too,” Vanessa replied.
